Face Reshaping / Square Jaw Reduction

The size of the jawbone, or mandible, and its main muscle, the masseter, are the primary anatomic factors determining the width and shape of the lower face.

Many Asian patients prefer a more slender jaw profile to a stronger square or flared contour that might feel out of proportion to other more delicate facial features.

Some women feel a prominent jaw makes them appear less feminine.

Reduction of the mandibular angle is particularly effective in changing a round or angular shaped face into a more oval contour. This is sometimes done in conjunction with a chin augmentation.

Jaw reduction may be undertaken using surgical or non-surgical methods.

Square Reduction by Botulinum Toxin

Although temporary, DYSPORT / BOTOX can be repeatedly injected into the jaw muscle (masseter muscle) at intervals of three months.

Weakening the muscle's nerves leads to atrophy or shrinkage that may last for up to six months.

If the main determinant of jaw width is too prominent a mandible bone, injecting DYSPORT / BOTOX will make no difference.

While obviously less invasive than jawbone surgery, the results are minimal at best.

If the masseter muscle is not overly developed to start, DYSPORT / BOTOX injections may simply shrink the muscle enough to make the prominent bone underneath it appear even more objectionable.

Eliminating behaviors such as teeth clenching or constant gum chewing that may stimulate muscular development may also be of some value.
